Steel Mill Process Control/SCADA

Among the real-time systems I’ve worked on, I’ve worked on oven control software and other process control applications in steel mills.

Steel Mill Process Control/SCADA – Statistical Control and Data Acquisition

At Lukens Steel, I designed and implemented a system to collect data from expert system operators on an offset roll leveler.  A leveler of this type is used to remove dents and wrinkles from sheet metal coming from the milling process, in this case a 140″ rolling mill.

This data collected was used to develop a statistical model to anticipate operator inputs on the system, and ultimately to control the leveler without operator interaction.  The system collected data on rolling mill stock, the quashed slabs that were becoming sheet metal, and based on material type, gauge, temperature, and size, the system preset the entry and exit settings for the leveler.

Systems like these are a generally a hybrid of pure data process control systems by companies like Allen-Bradley, Honeywell, or others, and computer technology with interfaces that can read/write to the process control equipment.
